LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA Antique LONG RIFLE by WILLIAM SOPER COUNTERFEITER!
GERMAN SILVER DOG & HUNTER
Description: LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA Antique LONG RIFLE by WILLIAM SOPER COUNTERFEITER! GERMAN SILVER DOG & HUNTER Here we present an antique W.H. Soper Percussion Rifle made circa the mid-1800s in London, Ontario. William H. Soper (b. 1815 in New York, US) moved to London, Ontario with his wife and two sons, and put out his shingle as a gunsmith in 1849 with both his sons working for him. He and his shop was known for good quality. However, he and his sons were charged with counterfeiting US coinage in 1858. His elder son, Robert, was convicted along with his father, though William Jr. appears to have had his charges drop, perhaps due to his young age of 17. In any case, while William Sr. and Robert spent 4 years in prison, William Jr. and his mother, Betsa, continued to run the family business and making ends meet. Robert went on to be a gunmaker, smith, and inventor variously in Sioux Falls, Iowa, Detroit, Michigan, and London, Ontario. William Jr. appears to have moved back to New York and it is unknown what happened to William Sr. & Betsa. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is well-rifled and patinated. The stock shows use and remains solid with stable cracks on the left side. Brass hardware including a small patchbox and a German silver ornament of a hunter’s and dog’s silhouette. A nice piece! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 32-1/2 inches. Caliber: .45 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1600 #254033 SOLD Antique: Yes |
