Massachusetts “Sea Fencibles" flintlock musket dated 1826. Overall length is 54½". The 39" round .69 caliber smoothbore barrel has a good bore. It is fastened to the stock by wedges with escutcheons. The breech is proofed “PM" over “L.H. 1826" (the “6" was stamped backwards and then reversed). There is one additional proof type stamp on the rear. The lock is marked “London" over “Warranted". The lock and cock have light decorative engraving. The nose cap, three ramrod pipes, trigger guard, side plate, butt plate are nicely aged brass. Metal is smooth with a mix of original bright finish and brown stain. Walnut stock is good with scattered dents and small tight cracks at the escutcheons and at the tail of the lock. The side plate is engraved “No 16". Barrel has a front sight/bayonet lug. Original sling swivels are present. The distinguishing feature of the Mass."Sea Fencibles" musket is the heavy brass butt plate with its large rounded top. The action, which has a roller frizzen, functions correctly. When encountered, these “Sea Fencible" muskets have usually been altered to percussion. Here’s the rare opportunity to own a Mass. “Sea Fencible" musket in original flint.
