1800s BRITISH Antique BRASS BARRELED FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS Ashmore London “LONDON” Marked Barrel & “ASHMORE” Lock!
Description: 1800s BRITISH Antique BRASS BARRELED FLINTLOCK BLUNDERBUSS Ashmore London “LONDON” Marked Barrel & “ASHMORE” Lock! Here we present an antique British Flintlock Blunderbuss, made circa the early 1800s in London, England. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel. They are flared at the muzzle, frequently throughout the entire bore, and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern-day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range. A blunderbuss in handgun form was called a Dragon, and it is from this that the term “Dragoon” evolved. The flintlock blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was used in many capacities, not the least of which were for Naval boarding or defending vessels, stagecoach and messenger companies, home defense and more. The flintlock blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was capable of firing up to 20 buckshot in front of 120 grains of black powder, according to Spencer Tucker in Almanac of American Military History, Volume 1. This particular example is highly likely to have been used in the War of 1812 on the side that didn’t win! “LONDON” is marked a top the barrel with “R. ASHMORE/WARRANTED” engraved on the lock. Richard Ashmore was a lock maker in England in the city of Wednesbury in Straffordshire County in the 1820s through about 1855. Many of his locks were exported to the United States and used on long rifles and the like in both flintlock and percussion format. The overall condition is very good. The action is excellent, and it will spark. The bore is in great shape. The stock is smooth and solid, and the barrel is pinned. From muzzle to flash hole the barrel measures 13-3/4 inches. A blunderbuss like this one is what most people imagine a pirate crew using to board a ship! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 14-1/8 inches. Caliber: Approximately 28 Gauge Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $4735 #201312 SOLD Antique: Yes |
