About Us: Modern gun owner that inherited some antique guns.
Superb Example London Brass Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss 200+ years old!
Description: I inherited this gun. Unfortunately I am in no way an expert in antique guns. I just know the person it came from was an avid antique gun collector and this was his most cherished piece and is very desirable. I also received a couple other guns (a cemetery gun and a pepperbox pistol) that I will be listing soon too I think. If I have anything wrong here please let me know, or if you have any other additional information on this gun I would love to hear it and add it here. Late eighteenth, early nineteenth-century brass barrelled blunderbuss, a type that was carried by British troops during the American Revolution. The brass barrel bears the stamping “London”, and has two proof stamps. The lockplate is marked “H Osborn”(Henry Osborn) The gun is in unbelievable shape for being over 200 years old! Very minimal wear. The mechanism operates crisply as it should. Beautiful detailed engraving throughout the gun. I have not tried to clean or polish anything. The original patina is excellent! Everything appears to be original right down to all the engraved fasteners. The cannon style brass barrel is round, 14” long and the bore of the muzzle is 1.25” in diameter. Measuring the bore is not easy due to the tapered barrel but using some clay and a caliper it appears to be 70 caliber. Total overall length of 29.5” This would have been an extremely expensive gun in its time and would have most likely only been owned by a high ranking officer or a wealthy person. From my research I believe I priced it for a quick sale. USA and Canada shipping included. The gun is available for local viewing in Victoria BC. Henry Osborn was an eminent gun and sword manufacturer of Bordesley Birmingham. He passed away in 1827. Few weapons inspire imagination about the sounds of a Revolutionary War battlefield like a blunderbuss. The name blunderbuss comes from the Dutch word donderbus, which translates to “thunder box”—an accurate description of the surprisingly explosive effect this gun created. A precursor to the shotgun, the flintlock blunderbuss was often issued to cavalry or naval troops for use in close-quarter combat. Also know as the one of the first picks for coach drivers protecting their haul. It could clear threats in a large area with just one shot. With a short, large-caliber barrel just 14 inches and a flared muzzle, the blunderbuss was best for use at short range, to scatter shot or other damaging projectiles. SOLD |
