Circa 1700s Flintlock with Brass Barrel
Description:
NSN, 1 3/4" bore at the muzzle, 18 3/16" flared brass barrel with a very good bore some mild verdigris along its length (heaviest towards the breech). This is an imposing weapon that has thick-walled brass barrel (over 1/4" thick on average) with an overall mottled yellow-ochre patina with spots of dark freckling throughout and scattered minor handling marks and surface blemishes throughout. The lock has an overall freckled gray patina with patches of plum-brown around the edges and what looks like washed out markings ahead of the swan-necked cock and the possible remnants of a 1700's date behind. The lock is equipped with a large faceted frizzen and matching original pan. The lock itself is still very tight and functions flawlessly. The brass triggerguard is a crude emulation of the British style with a vaguely pineapple-shaped finial and has, along with the buttplate and remaining ramrod thimble, a slightly mottled yellow-ochre patina with paler and brighter yellow along the raised areas. Instead of a sideplate the gun is outfitted with two shaped brass plates surrounding the lock screw heads commonly seen on American-made guns of the period. The large walnut stock has a slightly British look with an added oil and varnish finish and numerous small handling marks and blemishes throughout. Additionally, there are some with-the-grain cracks fore and aft of the lockplate, around the rear lock screw head on the left side, and within the ramrod channel at the tip. Chips are missing at the front of the lockplate, toe of the butt, and along the top edge of the lockplate behind the cock. An old inventory number is stamped into the wood to the right of the wrist tang: "1362", and there is no ramrod. American-made blunderbusses are quite rare and this distinctive firearm bears all of the characteristics expected of a domestically produced piece. Antique
