#1437 Springfield 1884 Trapdoor Carbine, 22” x45/70 with very fine bore
Description: #1437 Springfield 1884 Trapdoor Carbine, 22” x45/70 with very fine bore (8+ on a scale of 10), tight action, 248XXX range. This little Cavalry carbine is a standard 1884 variation but with the following incorrect earlier features. It has the 1873 dated (1879 style) breechblock and 1879 style “R” rear sight, but it does have the correct carbine short wrist stock, saddle bar and ring, trap buttplate and cleaning rod department, serrated trigger, lockplate, etc. However, the barrel and receiver number are NOT in the carbine range of manufacture and the front sight is incorrect, so I suspect this may be a correctly shortened and recrowned rifle barrel and receiver placed in a very decent and correct carbine stock. The metal is smooth plum brown with no serious pitting of mention (except for some crustiness on the lockplate) and good markings. The wood is very decent, although any cartouches have long been worn (or cleaned) away, but it does NOT show rough useage. For the collector/shooter who does not want to cough up $1500+ for a totally correct Indian Wars cavalry carbine, here is a great compromise with a really nice bore. G+/VG overall. $1125 SOLD Antique: Yes |
