RARE MARLIN MODEL 1881 DELUXE 28 OCTAGON RIFLE, .40-60 MARLIN CALIBER (SAME AS .40-65 WIN), WITH MARLIN LETTER
Description: RARE MARLIN MODEL 1881 DELUXE 28 OCTAGON RIFLE, .40-60 MARLIN CALIBER (SAME AS .40-65 WINCHESTER), WITH MARLIN LETTER, #29XXX, SHIPPED 1891. This 131 year old Marlin was special ordered with a checkered pistol grip and double set triggers. The marlin letter states is is a Rifle, .40/60 caliber, 28" barrel, set trigger, pistol grip stock and shipped in 1891. The barrel retains fine lightly aged blue and has excellent markings. It is fitted with an original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and a copper blade Rocky Mountain front sight. The magazine tube is uncleaned and is ageing to gray/brown with blue on the upper section protected by the barrel. The receiver blue is mixing heavily brown and shows no evidence of cleaning. The forend is fine and does not have the usual crack ahead of the spring loaded sliding flat loading gate (often the forearm cracks ahead of this area), Checkering on the forend is worn, but visible. The butt stock has the correct smooth steel shotgun butt plate and there is a triangular piece of replaced wood in in the toe of the stock beginning from the lower butt plate screw and going forward for a few inches. It is a fairly old and neat job, but there are people who can blend wood so well it is hard to detect (if one wanted to go that route). Looks like a small wrist repair with a dowel visible only in the right side just behind the receiver that is blended well and hard to see. The checkering on the pistol grip shows some wear but is all there and distinct. the double set triggers function correctly and the bore shows deep rifling and only some light scattered roughness. Receiver screws are excellent. A rare and attractive Marlin that came out of here in Montana.
