14-106 SMITH CARBINE
Description: SMITH CARBINE Smith Carbine. Made by American Machine Works, Springfield, Massachusetts, Massachusetts Arms Co. 1861-35. Totally quantity estimated over 30,000. 50 caliber, percussion, breechloader. Single shot, loaded by depressing the latch ahead of the trigger which releases barrel allowing it to pivot downward giving the appearance of folding in half. 21-5/8” round barrel. Octagonal to rear of barrel band. Iron mountings; standard finish blued, with casehardened breech. Walnut stocks. Sling ring mounted on left side of the breech; early carbines by Mass. Arms Co. (only).On left side of the breech: Address/Poultney & Trimble Baltimore, U.S.A. and Smith’s Patent/June 23, 1857. The Smith was Patented Gilbert Smith, Buttermilk Falls, New York, and agents were Thomas Poultney and D.B. Trimble, Baltimore. Almost the entire production was purchase by the government. This gun is #13701, numbers match. Smith is in very good condition. Condition: Wood is very good with a few dents and dings and age cracks here and there, bore is excellent with all of rifling and shiny, apparently was issued and used a little bit to show a little wear, but Bore still in ex condition.
