Allen & Wheelock Drop Breech Rifle Low Serial Number 57

Description:
This .41 caliber, drop breech, cartridge, single shot rifle has a part octagonal and part round 26" rifled barrel, marked on the top flat with “Allen & Wheelock, Allen’s Pat Sept 1860” The breech is opened by releasing a spring catch and lowering the trigger guard. The angled hammer head falls on the long firing pin which goes through the dropping breech block. This is the more desirable takedown version mark with the rare 1860 patent date. Very nice bore that I will rate a 7.5 on a scale from 1 to 10. This rifle has the low serial number 57 which is marked on lower tang and behind the sight. Action functions nicely. Rifle retains a smooth gray / brown patina. Both forend and buttstock are in good condition. Buttstock has small crack near the toe of buttplate (see pic). Buttplate has the trapdoor. This is a rarely seen rifle for sale  and with the rare patent date, takedown feature, and low serial, this is a must have for the antique rifle collector.
