Antique EVANS “TRANSITIONAL” Lever Action MAINE Made “SPORTING MODEL” Rifle 1 of 1,050; SCARCE 28-Round Repeater
Description: Antique EVANS “TRANSITIONAL” Lever Action MAINE Made “SPORTING MODEL” Rifle 1 of 1,050; SCARCE 28-Round Repeater Here we present an antique Evans Transitional “Sporting” Model Rifle produced by the Evans Repeating Rifle Company of Mechanics Falls, Maine. Frequently referred to as “one of the most novel repeating rifles of the 19th century”, this .44 caliber centerfire carbine one of 1,050 Transitional Carbines manufactured between 1876 and 1877, with a total of under 15,000 total Evans rifles made throughout the lifespan of the company. By early 1876, Evans modified the original “Old Model” and began producing the so-called Transition model. Unlike the old model, the transition model had a walnut lower buttstock, as well as a redesigned buttplate. These changes improved the balance of the rifle, as well as protecting it from damage. These Evans rifles, which are not serialized, utilized a revolving type magazine with a full capacity of 28, .44 caliber metallic rounds loaded through the butt of both the rifles and the carbines. The hammer is mounted on the underside of the frame, just ahead of the breech lever and was manually cocked. The frame is rounded at the top and has no cut outs on the side. The forend fits square to the receiver front while the dust cover sits over the loading aperture. The Evans repeating rifle enjoys the distinction of being the only mass produced firearm ever attempted in the state of Maine. It also holds the greatest capacity of any repeating rifle ever produced and marketed in the United States. This rifle is a venerable old piece that appears to have resided in the attic since the mainspring stopped working a century ago. The action does not function at present as the mainspring is in need of repair/replacement. The bore is well rifled, though dim and dusty as it probably has not been cleaned since the action stopped running. This example sports a solid stock. This piece represents a unique and short-lived alternative to the Winchester rifle and would be a great piece for above the mantle or even a new mainspring! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 30 inches. Caliber: .44 Evans Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1385 #210274 SOLD Antique: Yes |
