JOSEPH LANG 450/400 2 3/8" with AMMO & LOADING INFORMATION - BLACK POWDER TOPLEVER SINGLE SHOT -LETTERED as EXTRA FINISH & EXTRA ENGRAVING - ACCURATE
Description: #8422, Joseph Lang & Son, 10, Pall Mall, London: A 450/400 2 3/8" Tip Down Break Open Toplever Single Shot; Made in 1897 and lettered as Extra Finish and Extra Engraving, The action with double underlugs and double bite; It has a 27" Ejector octagon barrel with a matted top flat with 1 standing & 2 folding rear sights, Sling eye on the barrel, Bolstered frame, Bushed striker, Top tang safety, Original proof of 80 grains of black powder with a 270 grain bullet, 15 1/8" LOP over a 13/16" checkered wood buttplate that has been there forever, 7 lbs. 3 oz., This gun is totally original, Steel engraved grip cap, Horn forend tip, 80% coverage of very nice period scroll engraving that is lettered as Extra Engraving, The original case colors remain at 20%, The original barrel blue at 80%, The original stock finish at 65% with scattered handling marks only, The checkering is at 90%, The good news here is the bore condition remains in excellent condition, No pits anywhere in the bore or chamber, The whole is cased in a more recent Lang leather trunk with a 1930's trade label, The gun is very accurate with 265 grain cast bullets, 35 grains of H-4198, 6.3 grains of dacron and put 3 shots into 7/8" at 50 yards with average velocity right at 1800 fps. With a 254 grain bullet, 36 grains of H-4198, 5.5 grains of dacron it put 4 shots into 1 3/4". Joseph Lang married James Purdey daughter and was one of the first pioneers of breech loading sporting firearms in the 1850's. He was very active with sporting dogs and early day field trials. It became Joseph Lang & Son in 1875, the son also named Joseph, apprenticed at Purdey. They moved to 10 Pall Mall in 1890 and became Joseph Lang & Son Ltd. in 1901. In 1907 the firm introduced the ever popular 470 Nitro Express. The sole USA agent was Abercrombie & Fitch in 1914 with a 5 year agreement. In 1925 the firm went with Stephen Grant. In the 1930's Grant & Lang joined with Atkin, Beesley, Hellis, Hussey, Watson Bros. and Lancaster. In 1960 the firm was operating as Atkin, Grant & Lang and by 1971 it was Churchill, Atkin, Grant & Lang. In the 1990's Ken Duglan operated it as AG&L and by mid-2011 Mr. Francis Lovel purchased the business. He was no stranger to the trade as he also owns Francis Lovel & Co. Ltd. Mr. Lovel shortly thereafter started building Grant over & unders, Grant sidelever's, Atkin spring openers, Atkin over & unders, Lang double express rifles and Lang bolt rifles.
