M1865 Starr SRC Carbine 56-50
Description:
In January 1858, Ebenezer Starr submitted his design for a single-shot, breech-loading rifle to the Washington Armory for evaluation. During testing, the rifle was noted to have no misfires, and its accuracy was considered better than average. Testers commented that if the gas seal could be improved, the weapon would be better than its rival, the Sharps carbine. Starr successfully morphed their percussion model into a metallic cartridge carbine by changing out the breechblock, hammer and barrel. Only five thousand of the new model Starr, chambered for the .56-50 Spencer rimfire cartridge, were ordered by the Ordnance Department, and many were issued to the 12th Pennsylvania Cavalry in the spring of 1865. This carbine was manufactured by Starr Arms Co. Yonkers, NY & was delivered to the US Gov't in March 1865 & issued to troops. The carbine is .56-50 cal. rimfire, single shot, falling block breech with 21" round barrel. All furniture is iron. Walnut stock & has sling ring mounted on left side of breech. Serial numbers continued from the percussion models. This carbine is SN# 32139. According to Springfield Research Serial # 32620 was issued to Company H of 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The barrel maintains about 80% blue. The bore has sharp rifling with minor corrosion and lots of shine. Faint inspectors’ stamps are on the stock and metal parts. The lock plate is stamped with Starr Arms Co. Yonkers, NY, the breech area is stamped Starrs' Patent Sept. 14, 1858, the barrel is stamped Starr Arms Yonkers NY. Front & rear sights both intact. A nice condition, rare, US Cavalry Starr cartridge carbine.
