Description:
The Hopkins & Allen / Merwin Hulberd Junior is an antique single-shot falling block rifle chambered in .32 Rimfire. It features a 26-inch barrel with fixed sights and is marked on the barrel with “Hopkins & Allen Manfg Co Norwich Conn, USA” and “The Merwin Hulbert & Co. Junior Pat June 23, 86 Oct 2, 88.” The rifle utilizes a falling block action typical of late 19th-century small-caliber target and sporting arms. Its overall finish has aged to a brown patina consistent with its period manufacture.
This rifle is used and retains its smooth wood pistol-grip stock and matching forearm. The stock includes a factory crescent-shaped metal butt plate. A crack is visible on the left side of the stock near the tang, and the stock fit is somewhat loose. The bore is dark from age and will need some work before firing. No serial number is present on the receiver or barrel. Mechanical operation of the falling block is described as strong, and the markings remain legible despite surface wear typical of antique firearms.
Included is the rifle itself in its complete configuration with original wood furniture and metal butt plate. No additional accessories, tools, or packaging are noted. The Hopkins & Allen / Merwin Hulbert Junior represents a late-19th-century collaboration between two American manufacturers known for small-frame rimfire rifles, combining Merwin Hulbert’s patented action design with Hopkins & Allen’s production in Norwich, Connecticut.
