Rare Austrian Werndl Model 1867 Single Shot Military Rifle
Description: Rare Austrian Werndl Model 1867 Single Shot Military Rifle Offered here for sale is an excellent opportunity for the military collector to obtain an original scarce Early military rifle of the 19th century. The Austrian Model 1867/77 Werndl–Holub 11mm Infantry Rifle was a single-shot breech-loading rifle that the Austro-Hungarian army adopted in 1867. It replaced the Wanzl breech-loader conversion of the muzzle-loading Lorenz rifle. Josef Werndl (1831-1889) and Karel Holub (1830-1903) designed and patented their design; Werndl later bought out all the rights. This wonderful example although well used and evidently seeing actual service has been expertly cleaned, and even still has regimental markings on the steel butt plate. It is nicely dated with 1868 and 1870 markings on lock and barrel. The original 1867 model of the Werndl–Holub featured an external hammer mounted on the lock plate however in 1877 the second model moved the hammer to the inside of the lock plate, and are called "internal" hammers, though they are still exposed. The metal condition is overall good with a brown on barrel and the stock is in solid shape for its age, with bumps and bruises but a wonderful color and nice finish. The cleaning rod is still in place, as are both sling swivels. 11.5 mm caliber. The metal is a bit more “grittier” around lock with very fine “pin-prick” patina on exterior. The bore is still very good with some spots but not pitted. A couple of very tiny exterior “stress” cracks around butt plate shown in images. One small screw replaced in a sling swivel. Difficult to find. Great for display in any collection of early European breechloaders. Thank you for your winning bid.
