Rare J P Gemmer Custom Spencer Plains Rifle

Description:

Desirable Sporting Rifle Conversion of a Spencer Civil War Carbine Made by J P Gemmer.
When the Civil War came to a close in May of 1865, the U.S. military had hundreds of thousands of firearms of various makes and designs in the arsenals. Many were now outdated and sold as surplus, and even some of the more advanced arms like the Spencer repeaters were not all retained. J. P. Gemmer, who took over the Hawken brothers' shop in St. Louis in the early 1860s, and other firearms dealers converted surplus carbines and rifles into sporting rifles for settlers headed to the West. Many by Gemmer and Meacham were styled after the classic plains rifles used before the war. This example has a brass / coin blade front sight, sporting notch rear sight, "J P Gemmer ST. LOUIS" stamped on barrel, standard Spencer marking on top of the action, forend cap, double keyed forend, a wooden ramrod with brass tip, removed saddle ring bar, set trigger, cheek piece, and custom buttplate. 50 caliber with 29 3/4” heavy octagon barrel with a strong bore. Hickory cleaning rod has seen use by evidence of a repair connecting the two original pieces. Forend is in good condition showing the normal handling marks. The original Spencer stamped serial is only partially visible. The rifle is marked with four dots on: bottom barrel, front of frame, loading tube, and maybe different locations that I haven’t checked. Could this be J P Gemmer’s fourth rifle manufactured? Buttstock has cracks and repairs due to hard plains use. This rifle recently came out of Kansas, and boy I wish it could talk. All in all a great western plains look manufactured by an extremely rare and seldom seen famous gunmaker. More pictures available upon request. Please feel free to ask questions.
