Tranter-Type Small Game Rifle by Harris Holland (Holland & Holland)
Description: Serial #3680, .380 CF, 28" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling and pitting towards the breech. This is a pre-1876 rifle (the year H. Holland changed its name to Holland & Holland) and has an overall smooth, plum-brown patina on the barrel. The edges of the barrel facets have mild silvering, and the "H. HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND ST. LONDON" marking along the top is shallowly engraved, but still crisp and legible. Traces of blue remain at the breech, which carries over to the protected areas of the frame, which is otherwise also a mellow plum-brown color, and the side-lever. The serial number is overstamped with a new number on the right side of the frame. The wedge-fastened, checkered walnut forend and pistol-gripped buttstock are in fine shape, with scattered minor handling marks and small surface blemishes throughout, mainly on the left side of the butt. The rifle is outfitted with the original barleycorn front sight and two-leaf rear sight, and the lock-up is still tight; the action is fully functional. This is a fine example of a Tranter-type single-shot rifle, made by one of the most prestigious names in British gunmaking.
