U.S. CONTRACT REMINGTON TYPEII "SPLIT BREECH" CARBINE
Description: RARE SPLIT BREECH SADDLE RING CARBINE. SN #5490. Cal. 50 RF. Rare carbine with 20″ round barrel, pinched blade front sight and 2-position 500 yard carbine flip rear sight. Receiver has a sling bar & ring on left side with 2-line Remington address & patent numbers on top tang. Mounted with nicely figured, slab sawed, uncheckered American walnut with tapered carbine forearm secured with a single band and a screw with spring keeper for the band. Buttstock has a carbine/musket-style smooth steel buttplate with “US” on top tang . The split breech designation generates from the design of the breech block which is similar to the succeeding Rolling Block but with two knurled protruding ears over the topof the reciever and the hammer mounted in the center. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms the U.S. contracted for 15,000 of these carbines in Oct. 1864 but the first delivery wasn’t until Sept. 1865 and final delivery in May 1866. In 1870 the U.S. Gov’t sold the majority of these carbines back to Remington who promptly resold them to France where they were used in the Franco-Prussian War. This carbine was made without the sling swivels on the bbl band and buttstock. Buttstock is missing the ring portion. Apparently very few of these rare carbines remained in the United States and few have been re-imported and are seldom encountered today. Very good condition. Most of metal being mostly a smooth mottled blue-gray patina. with traces of case colors on breech block. Top tang has a tight crack approx. 1 3/4" long, otherwise wood is sound with normal nicks & dings and retains a dark hand worn patina. Mechanics are crisp, bore shows strong rifilng, but has roughness. Buyer pays $35.00 shipping to lower 48 states. I accept USPS Money Orders or Bank Cashier's Check. Will accept Personal Check, with shipping hold. Add 3% for Credit Card Purchase. Three day, non-firing, non-disassembly, inspection period. If returned, for any reason, full refund, less shipping.
