Winchester 1894 special order 25-35
Description: Listed is a very nice well preserved special order Winchester 25-35 rifle embellished with a half round half octagon 26 inch barrel. The wood has a few dings and light bumps but no cracks or significant marring. It retains most of its original finish with the bluing at 90 % or better. The case colors on the hammer, trigger and lever have faded to the typical off colored mottled plumb seen in most of these rifles that have successfully managed over 100 years. This one happens to be 114 years old. The front sight is a dove tailed Marble with the rear barrel sight being the typical Winchester vertically adjustable open notch. A tang sight is mounted on the rifle and it remains in excellent condition. It may well have come from the factory when the rifle was originally produced. The letter for the rifle has been misplaced but it will confirm the originality of the rifle even though I can't remember whether or not the sight was delivered on the rifle at the time of its manufacture. It certainly looks like that may have been the case. The action is very smooth and the barrel is slightly frosted with excellent lands and grooves. With hand loads using 117 grain Hornady soft point bullets it will pattern a little under 2 inches at 100 yards. Even though it has a metal curved butt plate the recoil is not abusive due to its small caliber. It also has a more characteristic look than those with the shotgun buttstock. This caliber came into being in the mid 1890's along with the more popular 30-30 but is a much more rare finding. Many feel that it perhaps was our first recognized varmint cartridge being one of the earliest to use modern powders. Most of the gun writters today tout it for its accuracy and usefullness as a medium range deer cartridge. Regardless of all these things this is a handy good looking example of what it is and would make a valued part of anyones Winchester collection. Hopefully my pictures will answer most questions but if not just call or drop a note. Thanks much for your interest. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .25-35 Winchester |
