Winchester Model 1873 3rd Model 32-20 Winchester 24” Rifle Circa 1890
Description: The Winchester Model of 1873 is considered by many to be the Rifle that Won the West alongside the Colt Peacemaker (the Pistol that Won the West). The 1873 was the first centerfire rifle that allowed its owner to carry one type of ammunition for both rifle and pistol. The 1873 was most famously chambered in the .44-40 Winchester cartridge, widely known for its stopping power. Eventually, the 1873 was also chambered for the .38-40, the .32-20, and .22 LR cartridges. The rifle shown here is a 3rd Model Rifle, meaning that the singular guide for the dust cover is machined into the receiver rather than being a separate part held down by a screw. The “Rifle” designation means it has the 24” octagonal barrel rather than the 20” round barrel of the carbine or the 30” round barrel of the musket version. It is chambered for the .32-20 round, popular for use on small game though it could be used for defense just as well. With a full-length magazine tube, the 1873 has a capacity of 15 rounds plus one in the chamber. The magazine tube cap has been buggered. The buttstock does not have a storage space in it and so this rifle has the standard solid plate. The stock and forearm both have cracks in the wood which is understandable given the age of the rifle. The bore exhibits pitting but the rifling is still defined. The top of the bolt has minor wear which is shown in the pictures. The dust cover is not present on this rifle, sadly. It is entirely possible that it was removed after its original purchase though this seems unlikely. The right side-plate has a notable scratch in it and the pin above it has the head squashed slightly. The manufacturer markings on the barrel and the model name on the upper tang are clearly defined, while the caliber and serial number are somewhat worn. There is a small ding in the right side of the barrel. The serial number dates this rifle to the year 1890, which makes this rifle 130 years old! Overall, this rifle is an interesting piece of American history and it interesting to think what role it played in the Old West.
