"Bethlehem County Kentucky Rifle W/ Indian Head Motif (57589)
Description: "Made circa 1800. 44 caliber with a 47.5" barrel. This is a very fine Early Kentucky from the Bethlehem County, Pennsylvania School. It is unsigned, but does have a Joseph Golcher lock. This gun has an incised carved stock on the left hand side of the butt stock and around the top part of the wrist around the tang. The barrel has a light gray to light brown patina. This gun is a reconversion. The patch box has an “Indian Head" design. Much has been written about the Indian Head figure that is found on Kentucky's. The general consensus despite the name is the these carved figures found in the Kentucky rifles are not Indians after all, but instead faces with Pilleus Libertatis, or Liberty caps. This seems to be the most convincing argument that these were patriotic symbols of a newly formed nation. Very neat original Kentucky Rifle that has desirable features of the carved stock and the carved “Indian Head" Antique: Yes Price: $9,750.00 Contact Seller |
