"English Volunteer Carbine Manufactured by Benjamin Raper of Leeds. Circa 1827-1837. The overall length is 43". The 27 ¾" round .71 caliber barrel has a very good bore. Approximately 92% of the original brown finish remains on the barrel. The lock and hammer are bright turning gray. The brass nose cap, ramrod pipes, trigger guard, butt plate, and side plate have a nicely aged brass patina. The stock is fine with sharp edges, original finish, and no cracks or chips. This carbine, which has a pin-fastened barrel generally, conforms to the Pattern 1799 Elitott Light Dragoon configuration with the exception that it does not have a sling bar and the ramrod is straight with no Eliott swell and notch. The lock is marked ""Raper. Leeds" with a small ""WK"" to the right. The barrel has Birmingham proofs. The action functions correctly. This is a great example of a volunteer carbine. Don’t miss it. Note: Volunteer is also known as Yeomanry. The Yeomanry were volunteer in England and were known by the country or city under the overview of the local lord or governor who provided the Yeomanry with uniforms, weapons, horses etc. They existed to act as a guard in the event of foreign invasion of England.
