"Scarce Model 1816 U.S. Flintlock Musket. Manufactured by D. Nippes, Philadelphia and dated “1837", in excellent condition. Nippes’ total production was approximately 1,600 muskets from 1837 to 1840. This musket has a 42" round .69 caliber barrel with very good smooth bore. The metal retains most of its smooth brown finish. The lock retains most of its original dark case colors. Stock is fine with sharp edges and approximately 1" missing chip at the barrel tang, and a few storage dents including one to the rear of the hammer. Lock is marked “1837" to the rear and US/ D,Nippes/ PhilA to the center. The barrel tang is dated “1837". Barrel is marked US/ JH/ Sunken circle “P" proof. Stock is stamped “JH". The butt plate tang is marked “US". All screws are crisp. The touch hole shows no evidence of erosion or pitting. It appears to have been fired very little, if at all. The swivels and cleaning rod are present. Action functions correctly. You’ll go a long way before you find a better Model 1816 musket than this one, especially a Nippes.
