1837 NEW JERSEY STATE MILITIA Antique NIPPES M1816 FLINTLOCK Musket BAYONET 1 of 1,600 Model 1816s; NEW JERSEY Marked MUSKET
Description: 1837 NEW JERSEY STATE MILITIA Antique NIPPES M1816 FLINTLOCK Musket BAYONET 1 of 1,600 Model 1816s; NEW JERSEY Marked MUSKET Here we present an antique New Jersey Marked D. Nippes Contract Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, manufactured in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania circa 1837. Daniel Nippes took over his father’s gun manufacturing mill in December of 1812 when his father died. The younger Nippes brought prosperity to the mill through work with the U.S. government. Beginning in 1837 and continuing through 1840, the mill at Mill Creek produced about 1,600 Model 1816 U.S. flintlock muskets, all being marked “US/D.NIPPES/PHILA”. The success he had with these first 1,600 muskets led to a second contract of 5,100 Model 1840 muskets between the years of 1842 and 1848, with the markings “D.NIPPES/US” and “MILL/CREEK/PA”. The M1816 was in production at Springfield (325,000) and Harpers Ferry (350,000) between 1816 to 1844 with around 675,000 muskets produced during this run, along with another 146,421 being produced by independent contractors. It saw service during the Mexican-American War and was even pressed into service during the Civil War in both the updated percussion and the old flintlock format. In the 1850’s, many 1816’s went through the conversion from flintlock to the more reliable percussion system. The overall condition is very good. The action is excellent. Original flintlock. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is in great shape and bears a clear “JH” cartouche. The top of the barrel is marked “US” and “JH” with a “P” proof. This one also has “C.E.M.” on top of the barrel and “C.E. MULFORD” stamped on the length of the trigger guard tang, which we believe to be a quartermaster or state inspector’s marking. A very nice, original Model 1816. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 42 inches. Caliber: .69 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast.
