American Revolutionary War US Colonial Dutch Flintlock Infantry Musket w/ Bayonet *RARE*
Description: *SALE PENDING* Very Rare American Revolutionary War Colonial Dutch Flintlock Infantry Musket with Original Bayonet, .78 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1750's. This is an excellent example of an authentic Revolutionary War musket which undoubtedly saw use in the hands of an American patriot. In the years leading up to the Revolution Dutch made guns could be found in great quantity throughout the colonies and saw extensive use throughout the early years of the conflict. Muskets such as this were made under contract for the British government in the style of the standard Brown Bess and issued to colonial regiments fighting for the crown during the French & Indian War. Naturally when the war ended in 1763 the Dutch contract muskets remained in colonial hands only to be turned against the British when the first shots of the Revolution were fired in 1775. In fact the very musket which fired the first shot at Bunker Hill that sold at in October 2019 for nearly a half million dollars was a Dutch gun of similar form. Since these guns had already served in one war and were now twenty years old by the time of the Revolution many were in need or repair and it is common to find American muskets restocked in native wood such as Cherry or fruit wood as this example is. The barrel measures 41" long and retains it's full original brass half-moon blade front sight. The first 9 1/2" of the barrel is octagon transitioning to round with a flat top remaining nearly the full length of the barrel. There is a proof mark (OP?) deeply struck on the left flat of the breech and a maker's mark (AT?) stamped on the lock between the frizzen spring. Additionally there are regimental numbers "4" over "55" engraved on the barrel tang and a date "175?" faintly inscribed ahead of the barrel proof. The barrel has a mottled salt & pepper color with heavy pinprick surface pitting scattered throughout while the lock retains more of a solid silver/gray color with smooth surfaces and sharp edges. The lock remains in it's original unaltered form with all original components. The stock has an attractively worn untouched finish throughout with secure old knot checking in the butt and worm holes scattered around the sideplate and buttstock. The forearm remains intact and original with no splicing and features an incised line carved it's full length above the ramrod channel. There is some very neat and secure repair work done in period around the barrel tang, and old thin 2" sliver chip missing from the right tip of the forearm, and a sturdy old 3" crack on the left side of the forearm by one of the barrel pins. Original brass buttplate, sideplate, triggerguard, ramrod pipes, and nose cap band all have a lovely dark mustard patina. There is a small repair at the rear of the triggerguard bow. The buttplate is secured in typical Dutch fashion with two large nails driven into the butt and the trigger features a nicely forged rattail. A simple iron sling swivel is mounted at the rear of the triggerguard tang while a small hole through the forearm ahead of the third ramrod pipe indicates where the forward swivel once was. The flared iron ramrod likely dates to the later years of the Revolution and may have been sourced from a French Charleville musket. The action is crisp and functions perfectly and the frizzen snaps shut and springs forward securely. The hammer is slightly loose on the tumbler and the frizzen has been expertly resurfaced during the period of use. Miraculously the original bayonet has survived with this gun. The finish and patina matches the barrel perfectly and it fits over the muzzle with ease. The bayonet measures 20" long overall and features a massive 15 3/8" triangular blade. The socket features a dual line pattern engraved around it's base with "179" inscribed on the side. American used Revolutionary War muskets of this condition and originality rarely turn up for sale and are a prize among any collection.
