Antique French Infantry Musket
Description: Antique French Infantry Musket. Caliber unknown. 44.5” barrel. No identifiable barrel markings. Stock features 2 brass barrel bands and 1 steel (period replacement.) The barrel, lock plate, and hammer are all steel. The trigger guard, buttstock, flintlock pan and barrel bands are brass. The brass barrel bands and butt stock are stamped with the letter “D”.) The buttstock is period punch dot engraved with the number N219. The musket includes a wood ramrod (replacement, the original would have been steel and had a trumpeted end.) The stock is stamped with the letters “EF” surround by a circle with illegible lettering. The initials “GB” are stamped below (possible arsenal markings). Manufactured 1700’s. The musket is no longer mechanically functioning. The hammer cannot be un-cocked indicating internal wear. The musket is in rough cosmetic condition. The stock shows signs of period wear (nicks, dents, scratches.) There are a multiple breaks, chips, and cracks throughout the forestock and grip. There is evidence of both period repairs, and modern repairs. The lock has modern repairs done to the retaining screws. The trigger guard has a modern replacement screw. The ramrod is a replacement as is the steel barrel band at the foremost end. Both the barrel and lock plate are heavily pitted. The bore has not been visually inspected (requires a borescope.) This musket features 4 bands of brass tacks in the buttstock. It is unknown whether these tacks are a period Native American adornment or a later enhancement meant to visually improve the musket.
