NATIVE AMERICAN Style Copper TACK DECORATION

Here we present an antique Ketland & Co./Allport marked Trade Style Full Stock Flintlock Musket, made circa 1816 to 1823 in London, England. William Allport was a lock maker between the years of 1807 and 1823. Allport-marked Ketland locks are found during the years of 1816 and 1823. Thomas Ketland & Co. was a firearms manufacturer founded in Birmingham, England somewhere around 1760. Thomas Ketland Sr. was a highly successful Birmingham gunmaker. He started his business around 1760 and expanded into the export market around 1790. He died in 1816. The business carried on until bankruptcy in 1821. The company manufactured flintlock pistols and muskets, becoming quite successful in its field.

John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. If only this gun could tell us some stories!

The lock on this example reads "ALLPORT/Late Wth/KETLAND & Co" marked lock, The barrel is London proofed with the stock featuring Native American style copper tack decoration on the wood. This was possibly produced for sale to the African nations and colonies and later arrived in the United States. The European countries inhabiting these remote outposts or selling to them were very careful to sell only obsolescent firearms to the natives so that they could maintain the upper hand should tensions rise.


The overall condition is very good. Original mottled gray and dark patina throughout. Very good stock for the age and has little handling wear. The action is strong. The trigger guard tang is cracked (stable) but does not interfere with function. Legible markings. Darkened bore.
