British KETLAND 1777 BROWN BESS Flintlock Musket
Description: British KETLAND 1777 BROWN BESS Flintlock Musket Unit Marked Short Land Pattern Brown Bess! Here we present an antique Unit Marked Ketland & Company Pattern 1777 Short Land Pattern Brown Bess Flintlock Musket, Dated 1794, made in Birmingham, England circa the late-18th Century. Ketland & Company was one of the most prominent and active British makers of the 18th & 19th centuries and remains one of the most recognizable names in the British gun trade to this day. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the government and the colonies since the early 18th Century. This pattern of the Brown Bess Musket was devised during the American Revolutionary War and saw service in the colonies, the Napoleonic Wars, as well as the British invasion during the War of 1812. This musket has been marked many times over. The placard on the wrist is dated “1794”. The sideplate on the left stock flat is marked “No. 74” (gun/rack number). The left heel of the stock is marked “Y+C/65”, possibly for York Castle or York County Militia. Finally, the butt plate tang is marked “A/17” (company and regiment). The lock plate on this musket is inscribed "Ketland/& Co" ahead of the hammer. The left rear side of the barrel is stamped with two proof marks. The full-length stock has brass furniture including the side plate and butt plate. The interior of the lock is marked “L”. Overall condition is very good plus. The barrel is semi-bright. The markings are clear. The stock is in good shape with the signs of handling and warfare you might expect. This is a 225+ year old musket after all! The bore is smooth and dusty. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic example of a rare British musket that saw use Europe and possibly the Americas! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
