PRE-REVOLUTIONARY WAR Era Dutch Musket

Here we present an antique Early 18th Century Dutch Pattern Military Musket. Dutch flintlock muskets were imported into the American colonies starting in the early 18th century and are documented as used by the Patriots during the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin aided Massachusetts with the purchase of thousands of Dutch muskets. The Dutch muskets are described on pages 389-395 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume I".

During the early years of the British Colonies in America, there was little manufacturing capability available domestically, so items such as firearms, swords, and so forth were imported. Much came from England, but other European countries, such as the Netherlands, were also happy to supply the new and expanding market. During the French and Indian War, and even in the later American Revolutionary War, many of weapons used were of European manufacture.

This example is of Dutch origin, with an early pattern "rounded" lock plate as produced circa 1710-1720, after which a flat lock plate with beveled sides was used. An example much like this one is described in the book “Battle Weapons of the American Revolution” by George C. Neumann on page 108, item 58.MM "DUTCH INFANTRY MUSKET". Such weapons were definitely in the inventory of American Colonists during the French and Indian war as well as the American Revolutionary War.

The overall condition is good. Strong action, but reconverted. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid stock throughout with average wear and a nice smooth revarnishing. Markings are legible. The lock is completely unmarked, as is correct for the pattern. There is the designation “No 95” marked on top of barrel. It is also marked with “V: Gustet” on the side plate.
