Estate Treasure U.S. 1808 Flint Musket "T. French-Canton, Mass" Only 4000 Mfd w/Bayonet
Description: Estate Treasure U.S. 1808 Flint Musket "T. French-Canton, Mass - Special for the Holidays! We are pleased to present a recent "find" - from an estate in Connecticut is this UNTOUCHED and UNCLEANED Model 1808 .69 caliber flntlock musket with original bayonet. This specimen IS NOT one of those muskets found as cleaned with metal buffed but right out of an attic. Under the Militia Act of 1808 state contracted with makers to provide arms for their state militias. This one is marked "T. FRENCH" and "CANTON" "1810" on the lockplate. This is a contract with Thomas French, Blake and Kinsley of Canton, Massachusetts and according to Flayderman (Ref. 9A 1-29 U.S. Primary Weapons) ONLY 4000 SUCH MARKED MUSKETS WERE MADE. Following standards of 45" barrel and .69 caliber it is in solid/fine condition as untouched. The cartouche is light/worn on the left side of stock but still visible. The stock has a couple of initials neatly carved into butt. The metal is a pleasing brown patina with very clear markings on both lockplate and barrel. The sideplate opposite lock has a very interesting "punch" markings which appear to be "8 C T". This may be a Canton, Mass militia company or since found here in Connecticut may have been a company here. The bayonet is also marked with the number "4" and "U.S." - a scarce and wonderful complement to this musket. One can see by the marks on the muzzle end that the musket when acquired had the bayonet attached for many decades. A fine and scarce addition to any collection and with bayonet a complete estate "treasure"! Thank you for your winning bid.
