Here we present an antique Whitney Arms Co. New York State Model 1798 Flintlock Musket, manufactured between 1808 and 1812 in New Haven, Connecticut. This “NY” surcharged musket was produced by Whitney for the State of New York under his 1808 or 1810 dated contract. Whitney delivered 4,000 of these "hybrid" muskets based upon the 1808 Federal Contract Model to the state of New York between 1808 and 1812. His modifications and improvements to the guns over the standard 1808 specifications greatly influenced the specifications for the 1812 Federal contract muskets. Lock marked “N. Haven” in a ribbon under the pan with the top of the barrel marked “NY” and with a “P” proof in a sunken oval. 
In 1798, the threat of war with France prompted Congress to begin arms manufacture using private contractors. Regretfully, the National Armories could not produce the necessary arms. This brought about the series known as the 1798 Contracts. Some 27 different contractors, many with no previous experience in manufacturing arms, entered into contracts for some 40,000 muskets at a price of approximately $13.50 each. The contracts were for varying amounts, from 200 by Cobb of Norwich, Connecticut, to 10,000 by Eli Whitney, who was the inventor of the cotton gin, of New Haven, Connecticut.
Whitney’s manufacture involved the specialization of labor, which did not produce interchangeable parts, but was a major step forward. Eli Whitney was well regarded, as his contract for 10,000 muskets was a quarter of the total contracted for, and he was permitted extensions for delivery, which stretched into 1809.
Whitney’s arms incorporated features such as a brass pan that had previously been used by the French for the Model 1777 Musket. More importantly, he applied specialization of labor to his work. Instead of each arm being made individually, he standardized and assembled arms from the aggregate, which meant that parts would be interchangeable. Many authorities credit Whitney's attempts at the use of specialization of labor and potentially interchangeable parts as laying the foundation for the Industrial Revolution in America.
The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. Original flintlock. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and dim. The stock has been lightly refinished. There is a small repair forward of the lock. The forward sling swivel is a replacement that does not have a proper bolt. Ramrod is a replacement.
