Presentation Land Pattern Snap-Bayonet Flintlock Blunderbuss; ca.1795 Richardson Production; 12 Bore; Barrel: Two-Stage 15 1/2
Description: VFine and Super Rare Marked British Blunderbuss! Desirable and scarce antique English flintlock snap bayonet blunderbuss by Richardson...this impressive weapon was manufactured circa 1795 and represents an exceptional find for the advanced antique arms collector. Configured in land pattern, the features include iron furniture, 15 1/2" barrel(also of iron) fitted with a triangular sprung bayonet deployable via thumb release at the upper tang. Fastened via wedge to a stock of fine Walnut, there is a non-flexing repair to a surface crack at the upper wrist, the grip is coarsely checkered, and capped by a long tang iron buttplate. Flourish is provided by typically English file engraving that extends to the swan cock, the octagonal portion of the barrel and the edge of the lockplate, as well as fancy flared trigger guard that terminates in a pineapple finial. Luxurious silver wash finish as well as the oval escutcheon, identify this blunderbuss as an officer's private purchase, or possibly a presentation piece. A favorite of collectors, original blunderbusses are highly sought-after by enthusiasts, and this remarkable Richardson-signed example would be a showpiece addition to any public display or advanced private collection. Condition Fine, the weapon shows no sign of restoration and remains mechanically strong with a fine bore. The lockplate, barrel and furniture appear clean and free of rust, with typical surface pitting present on the exterior of the iron barrel. There is oxidation, as well as carbon spotting and staining from powder flash, and the markings are unbuffed, including two Birmingham proofs on the barrel at the breech. The stock is good, having several handling marks, dings and brass tacks, as well as faded checkering and a superficial surface crack to the right of the upper tang. The bayonet function is fine.
