Prussian 1740 Potsdam (Potsdamagaz) flintlock musket with bayonet
Description: In 1740 Frederick the Great succeeded to the throne in Prussia. He expanded the army and ordered modifications to some of the commonly used weapons. One of which was the infantry musket. This weapon available here is the Model 1740 musket as altered by Frederick the Great. It is .75 caliber with a 41" long round barrel. The barrel surface has a pewter gray patina showing light pinprick pitting over its entire surface. At the muzzle there is a bayonet stud on the bottom and a heavy brass front blade sight on the top. At the breech there is seen three “arrowhead” stamps and on the left side a worn “L” proof mark. The barrel tang has a depressed channel which acts as the rear sight. The bore is clear. The lock is Potsdam marked "Potsdammagaz" along with the maker’s initials, "DSE" along its bottom beveled edge (David Splitgerbers sel Erben). The lock is an overall dark gray/brown with mostly smooth surface. Operating parts include the heavy swan neck cock with beveled edges, faceted pan and unbridled frizzen, the frizzen spring with lightly chiseled edges. The lock is crisp and mechanically functional. There is a heavy brass nose cap and three heavy brass faceted ramrod thimbles along with a faceted tailpipe. The brass, long-tang trigger guard has lightly sculpted front and rear extensions. Other brass furniture includes the faceted butt plate (with long three-screw tang) and three-screw, serpentine side plate. Atop the wrist there is an oval brass thumb plate with the royal cypher “FR”. All brass shows nice mellow patina. The European walnut stock rates very good retaining excellent edges to the contour work and the overall dings and handling marks that come from age are minor. Minor stock repairs. The contouring includes a rib carved along both sides of the ramrod channel and island carving around the tailpipe. Both the lock plate and stock flats as well as the tang have island carving around them and the full-length comb flutes run from the Royal Cypher to the butt plate. Both of the original bail-style sling swivels are in place. The very heavy, trumpet-shaped ramrod is in place and retains its threaded hole in the head to attach appendages. This arm comes with what is likely its original bayonet. The bayonet fits extremely well and is 19 ½” long overall. The triangular blade is 15” long with an unmarked, flat top surface and guttered bottom surfaces. Socket has unbridged mortise. It is an overall dull pewter gunmetal gray with oxidized brown patina. Open to serious offers. I also have the period correct 1715 prussian saber with identical monogram. SOLD Antique: Yes Model: 1740 Barrel Length: 41 Condition: G/VG Manufacture Date: 1723/1740 |
