RARE 1770's Revolutionary War American Patriot Assembled Committee of Safety Flintlock Militia Musket
Description: Outstanding Revolutionary War American Assembled Committee of Safety Flintlock Militia Musket, .71 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa 1775/1776. This is a stunning original example of an American assembled Revolutionary War musket built in the pattern of a British Brown Bess utilizing both French and British components with an American Cherry wood stock. The gun's style, quality, and specifications point to it being one of those built early during the war under order of a patriot Committee of Safety organization to arm their local state militia units. Pinned barrel, probably French in origin, measures 44" long and is fitted with a bayonet lug and sighting notch cut into the tang. There is an illegible marking on the left side of the breech. Early 1770's French Charleville lock filed flat with older 1750's vintage cock and American forged top jaw. The touch hole remains original and unaltered. Buttplate, sideplate, and triggerguard are all 1760's vintage French Charleville parts. All of the iron components have a smooth worn dark mottled silvery/black patina. The four brass ramrod pipes are all taken from a 1750's/1760's vintage British Brown Bess which creates an interesting and unusual visual dynamic seeing both brass and iron fittings used on the same gun. Brown Bess style Cherry stock features a swell at the forearm, beavertail carving around the barrel tang, and round wrist which cuts far back below the comb. It was made without a nosecap or wrist escutcheon. The wood is in excellent condition overall showing rich color with a blackened patina forming within protected areas. One small old chip just ahead of the frizzen, a thin 1 ½" sliver missing along the right edge of the foreram at the muzzle, and a tight 3" crack on the left side of the forearm at the tip. The length of the forearm is all original without any splices or repair. While the old French triggerguard retains it's original sling swivel mount there is no provision made for a forward swivel in typical American fashion. Original forged iron rammer. The action is very firm and crisp with a strong mainspring and functions perfectly. Frizzen securely snaps shut and springs forward. This might just be the finest American musket we have had. The gun's wonderful architecture, originality, and condition would be very difficult to improve upon. A museum grade American Revolutionary War patriot musket ready for display!
