Tiger Maple Stocked Revolutionary War Flintlock American Militia Musket RARE Beautiful Original 1770's Patriot Minuteman Gun
Description: Very Rare & Attractive Tiger Maple Stocked Revolutionary War Flintlock American Militia Musket, .73 cal smoothbore, mfg. circa late 1770's. This is a gorgeous American made musket in wonderful condition. Unlike the majority of patriot muskets of the Revolution which were assembled from recycled British and Western European parts I think most of this gun's components were actually made here in the colonies. The barrel measures 43 ¼" long and shows no proofs other than a curious deep triangular stamp on the upper right side of the breech which may be a cryptic maker's touchmark. Long sighting notch cut on top of the breech in typical American fashion with original bayonet lug filed into a blade. The lock is of Germanic style but again may be American. There is a distinct illegible maker's mark stamped on the backside of the lock plate. The lock remains in it's original flintlock form with all original components. There are a few tiny pinholes burned through the pan from use. The touch hole has been bushed at some time but I think this was simply due to wear and deterioration from use as the lock shows no signs of reconversion. Overall the metal has a very nice smooth dark chocolate patina. American Tiger Maple stock is fine figured with beautiful striped grain and remains totally untouched. The butt is noticeably cast-off to the right yet still shoulders nicely. The wood has a rich plum/cherry color with a pleasing natural blackened patina throughout. Very well done period wrist repair with a nailed iron band. Some chipping along the left edge of the butt and a small grain crack just ahead of the lock but otherwise excellent for it's age with no further issues. The length of the forearm is complete and original without any splices or restoration and amazingly has no noteworthy chips or cracks. Dutch style buttplate and French triggerguard and sideplate are all gunsmith forged. The triggerguard is drilled for a sling swivel but there is no provision at the forearm. Typically Americans were not in favor of slings during this period. Brass British style ramrod pipes and nosecap have all turned very dark with age. Original hand forged iron rammer. The action is very firm and crisp and functions perfectly. Frizzen very securely snaps shut and springs forward. Excellent mechanics. Nice original scrolled rat tail trigger. This is certainly one of the best looking American Revolutionary War muskets we have had. The architecture, originality, and condition combined make this a really choice example. A very rare and important piece of early American history that helped forge the nation! Provenance: From a Connecticut estate.
