WESTERN COSTUME CO. Marked Antique SPRINGFIELD U.S. M1816 FLINTLOCK Musket
U.S. Military Flintlock with BAYONET
Description: WESTERN COSTUME CO. Marked Antique SPRINGFIELD U.S. M1816 FLINTLOCK Musket U.S. Military Flintlock with BAYONET Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Flintlock Musket Marked “W.C. Co.”, manufactured circa 1824 at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. “W.C. Co.” marked on top of the barrel for Western Costume Company, which still exists today, but was started in 1912 by Louis L. Burns when his proclivity for collecting especially Native American artifacts led to outfitting Hollywood actors with clothing and equipment such as firearms for countless films. The War of 1812 revealed many weaknesses in American muskets. In an attempt to improve both the design and manufacture of the musket, the Model 1812 musket was created. The Model 1816 made further improvements and replaced the Model 1812. The Model 1816 was a smoothbore, muzzle loading weapon which used a .69 caliber musket ball. The M1816 was in production at Springfield (325,000) and Harpers Ferry (350,000) between 1816 to 1844 with around 675,000 muskets produced during this run. It saw service during the Mexican-American War and was even pressed into service during the Civil War in both the updated percussion and the old flintlock format. In the 1850’s, many 1816’s went through the conversion from flintlock to the more reliable percussion system for the Civil War, as was this example prior to being reconverted back to flintlock. The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. Bright, smooth bore with some spotting. This example sports a solid stock with less than average wear. Cartouche remnants are present on the left stock flat. Markings are legible. “1824” dated lock. Good bayonet. A fantastic piece of American and cinematic history! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 42 inches. Caliber: .69 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
