This Type II Gwyn & Campbell 52 caliber percussion carbine is circa 1864. About 8,200 total of both types were made in Hamilton, OH. They are often called ""Union Carbines"" or ""Grapevine Carbines."" About 4,000 Type II carbines were made. They can be identified by the flat hammer and shorter lever. The 20"" octagon to round barrel has an excellent bore with light firing erosion at the muzzle. It has the standard short base rear sight. The barrel has approx. 98% blue. The lock is marked GWYN & CAMPBELL over PATENT over 1862 over HAMILTON. O. and the right frame front is marked UNION RIFLE. The frame, lever, lock plate, and hammer have their original case colors. The butt plate is a smooth blue-brown. The sling bar and ring are present. The stock is excellent with no cracks or chips and a strong WHR cartouche. The action functions correctly. This Type II carbine is ready for the finest collection.
