U.S. Model 1847 cavalry musketoon. About 6,000 of these interesting musketoon were made by Springfield Armory between 1848 and 1859. The overall length is approximately 41". The 26" round smoothbore .69 caliber barrel has a good bore. All the metal has been cleaned to its original bright finish. There is light pitting on the barrel with light to medium pitting in the bolster area. The polished brass bands, trigger guard, and butt plate are fine. The button head ramrod is fastened to the muzzle with iron swivels. The nicely-cleaned stock is fine with a visible cartouche. Barrel is marked with “V"/ “P"/ Eagle. The eagle is indistinct. Lock has the eagle over “US" in the center and Spring/ Field/ 1848 at the rear. The action functions correctly. Overall, this is a very nice cavalry musketoon that would be a great addition to a Mexican-American War or Civil War collection.
