Antique KETLAND & ADAMS British Proofed OFFICER’S FUSIL Conversion Musket Late 1700s to Early 1800s Percussion Large Bore

Description:
Antique KETLAND & ADAMS British Proofed OFFICER’S FUSIL Conversion Musket

Late 1700s to Early 1800s Percussion Large Bore

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Ketland & Adams British Proofed Percussion Conversion Fusil Officer’s Musket, made circa the late 1700s to the early 1800s. This example would have started out life as a flintlock musket and converted sometime after the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced. This smaller lightweight musket is commonly referred to as a fusil, pronounced “fuzee” back then. Fusils such as these were commercially made by local gunmakers rather than by the national armory and would have been used by officers, fusiliers, volunteer regiments, and even militia units, being a privately purchased weapon. Quite scarce in that only some officers chose to arm themselves with long arms when leading troops into battle.

This fusil follows the Brown Bess in form with its barrel secured by pins rather than bands. The barrel is 39-1/4" in length, slightly shorter than the regular 2nd pattern Brown Bess of 42". Thousands of these types of muskets were exported to the U.S. for militia service as well as for use as ships muskets, etc. As to officer's muskets, there was no official pattern which means that, while many are of smaller caliber, this was not a hard and fast rule. What is consistent is quality and practically every example displays a high level of. There is no reason for a privately owned officer's musket to have anything like a “rack number”, while some have the owner’s name, personal crest (if he had one) and regiment on them. This example has “N.6” on the barrel, possibly for a regiment. There are some that may be part of a set purchased by the officers of the regiment together.

The overall condition is very good. Original dark patina throughout. The stock is refinished, with an expected amount of wear, chips, and dings. Crisp checkering on the wrist. Small repair on the right forend near the forend cap. Absent front barrel pin and sling swivels. Legible markings on the lock. Crisp proofs on the breech and markings on the left flat. Strong action. The bore is dark but remains good for the age. The muzzle has been slightly cut down.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 39-1/4 inches.
