Beautiful 1830's Vintage Kentucky / Pennsylvania Rifle Attributed to Joseph Kimmel in Union County, Pa.
SOLD
Description: This is a beautiful antique Kentucky / Pennsylvania Rifle attributed to the Union County, Pa. gunmaker Joseph Kimmel circa 1830's. It is a full stock rifle with a .45 caliber bore. as you can see from the pictures, this rifle has a lot of brass embellishments and a very ornate patch box. While it is a percussion rifle now it is possible that it was originally a flintlock, there is no way to know for sure. The 38.75" inch long octagon barrel is marked on the top with the maker's initials "JK", and the rifle appears to have the original sights still intact in their original locations. The percussion lock is marked "Joseph Golcher", and the trigger assembly is an adjustable double-set type. As mentioned before, the brass work and inlays on this rifle really set it apart from others. The amount of time that Kimmel must have spent constructing this rifle was enormous. The patch box is spectacular and still opens by tripping a small lever on the buttplate. The brass wear-plate on the forearm is beautiful in addition to being functional, and both the upper and lower edge of the buttstock is even covered in decorative (and protective) brass. This Kentucky Rifle appears to have been used very heavily but was no doubt someone's pride and joy. The hammer still cocks back on this rifle and the double set triggers are still functional. The original stock has various cracks, dents, scratches, etc. but as you can see from the pics, it has a great look to it. It really is an amazing feeling holding this rifle and imagining what all it has witnessed. Given the time frame that this rifle was built it could have been used to fight off various American Indians in addition to hunting game for the table. This antique rifle would be an excellent addition to any early American firearms collection, and would a be a spectacular decorator to hang in a living room, library, etc. It really is a piece of antique functional art!
