BOWN & TETLEY, PITTSBURGH, PA. PERCUSSION HALF STOCK RIFLE CIRCA 1850’S.
Description: BOWN & TETLEY, PITTSBURGH, PA. PERCUSSION HALF STOCK RIFLE CIRCA 1850’S. 39 ½” octagon .41 caliber rifled barrel with lightly worn stamp on the top flat “BOWN & TETLEY/ MAKERS/ PITTSBURGH, PA.”. Lock plate stamped in a ribbon cartouche “JOSEPH GOLCHER”. Very nice and all original example of their rifles made under their own name as well as Enterprise Gun Works. James Whisker discusses this firm of makers in detail in his book ARMS MAKERS OF WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA on pages 12 and 26 and illustrates an almost identical rifle on page 175. Walnut stock with the original finish and unpolished brass mounts and barrel and lock with plum brown and original patina mixed nicely. Set triggers in working order and very good rifling. Many of these reasonably priced and well made rifles went West during the Gold Rush and thereafter. SOLD Antique: Yes |
