Kentucky Style HUNTING/TARGET Long Rifle!

Here we present an antique P. Powell Half Stock Percussion Target/Long Rifle, made circa 1860 to 1870 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Powell gunmaking family was a well-known Cincinnati gunmaker from the 1830s all the way until after the turn of the 20th century. The company went through several variations of the P. Powell and Sons name over the decades. This rifle is equipped with a stout octagonal barrel in .40 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques.

The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Bright bore! This example sports a solid stock in excellent condition! “SPIES/LONDON” is stamped on the lock. “P. POWELL” is marked atop the barrel.
