CONFEDERATE JS ANCHOR Antique Brit PARKER FIELD & SONS P1853 RIFLE-MUSKET
BRITISH BLOCKADE RUN IMPORT, AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
Description: CONFEDERATE JS ANCHOR Antique Brit PARKER FIELD & SONS P1853 RIFLE-MUSKET BRITISH BLOCKADE RUN IMPORT, AMERICAN CIVIL WAR Here we present an antique Confederate Parker Field & Sons Commercial Pattern Enfield Model 1853 Three Band Rifle-Musket, made circa the early 1860s in Birmingham, England. The most iconic of the imported arms to see service with the Confederacy during the American Civil War is the British Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle-Musket, marked with the Confederate JS / (ANCHOR) viewer’s mark of John Southgate. This mark appears on Confederate imported Enfield pattern arms produced under contract from October 1861 through April 1862. This marking system coincides with the 2nd Confederate contract with Sinclair, Hamilton & Company for 30,000 P-1853 Enfields. The Pattern 53 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. It was considered the apex European military gun of that time, introduced by the British War Department after several studies to improve the calibers and the dimensions of the previous models. However, it kept the same general appearance of the earlier pattern 1851. The overwhelming majority of P53 Enfield Rifles were made by commercial gun makers in Birmingham and London under contract. This gun features steel barrel bands, and the ramrod tip is shaped with the characteristic jag slot. The gun follows the standard Enfield pattern with a 39” barrel in .577 caliber with 3-groove rifling. The Enfield 1853 rifle-musket was also used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War and was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war. This example is British Proofed and London Retailer marked “PARKER FIELD & SONS, LONDON” on the lock. Per The Vintage Gun Journal: “The origins of the business started with John Field, who had been a goldsmith, sword cutler and gun maker at 233 High Holborn from 1783 to 1791. He traded under his name and also as Field & Co and Field & Clarke. When John died in 1791, William Parker went into partnership with his widow, and they traded as Field & Parker. In about 1814, William's daughter, Mary, married John Field Junior.” “William Shakespeare Field died in 1875, and John William Parker Field continued running the firm until he died in 1879. The firm ceased business in 1886 after just over 100 years in the trade. As to the address, High Holborn street, where Parker Field & Sons was located, was central and very well located; Charles Dickens lived on High Holborn for a while, as did William Morris, the influential designer and promoter of the Arts and Crafts movement.” The overall condition is very good. Nice patina throughout. Clear markings. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The stock shows use and remains solid. This one features the long range rear sight as well as the bayonet and scabbard. A very nice specimen! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 39 inches.
