Description:
DM Varney lived from 1808 to 1875 and became a Gunsmith some time in the 1840's-50's. In this time, he made many types of percussion firearms, but seemed to specialize in precision rifles. This example is quite similar to others he made and shows exceptional metal work, stemming from his silver smithing background. The condition of the metal work is fantastic for its age, except for an inlaid section that had been replaced with another alloy of metal. The stock however did not handle the passage of time very well and has developed a number of serious cracks throughout.
