Here we present an antique American Half Stock Superposed Load Percussion Rifle made circa the mid-1800s. A superposed load percussion rifle is a type of firearm that uses multiple charges of powder and lead shot stacked on top of each other in the barrel. This design allows for a higher capacity of shots to be fired in quick succession. The superposed load is typically used in percussion rifles. The superposed load concept was used in early firearms, including the Jennings 4 shot capacity superimposed flintlock rifle, which could fire four balls one after another loaded in stacked sequence. The United State military tried this idea with, IIRC, a a version of the M1817 Common Rifle. The sliding lock needed to primed for every load as it was slid back toward the breech. It was found to be less than perfect in operation and very slow to load. Add to that, neither the soldiers testing it nor the ordnance officers inspecting it felt any confidence in its safety.

This example’s stout octagonal barrel is in .45 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time. This is one such example.
This rifle would have also been used to put food on the table or defend the homestead against unwanted intruders!

The overall condition is good. Original brown patina. The stock is in good shape with less than average wear. Markings on the lock are legible. Brass replaced barrel pin, and two lock pins are replacements. The action is strong. The bore is dim with sharp rifling and is good for the age.
