Here we present an antique M. Moxley Signed Long Rifle, made circa the mid-1800s in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Meshach “Mose” Moxley was a fugitive slave who made his way to Pickrelltown, Ohio where he was befriended by a man named Obadiah Williams and his wife, Sarah Willaims. As this friendship flourished, a sympathetic Williams nervously traveled south to purchase Moxley’s wife and children so as to reunite the family. Upon his successful return, the Moxley family moved to Bellefontaine, Ohio where Moxley established a gun shop, becoming one of the very few African American gunmakers, especially during this period. This is an amazing story of fortune about a runaway slave who escaped to the north and became a successful gunsmith in Ohio.
