South Africa
Description: This is a very finely made and interesting rifle. It was made by John Hayton, an English gunmaker who went to South Africa about 1850, and set up shop in Grahamstown in the eastern Cape region. This rifle is serial no. 1880, and is estimated to have been made ca. 1860's. It is a single barrel, approx. .56 caliber with a very good to excellent bore, with very good rifling the whole way. The barrel is approx. 35" long. It has beautifully pattered damascus steel. The top rib is flat , approx. 3/4" wide with 1" spaced measuring lines from the front sight, 20 inches forward - incredible craftsmanship! The express sights have 1 standing blade and 4 folding leafs with a platinum line. The lock and hammer are in good working order, holding at half, full cock and the trigger releasing nicely. The L.O.P. is approx. 14 1/4", and it weighs approx. 10 lbs. Overall length is approx. 52" . Who knows what this rifle shot in Africa, and who hunted with it? It definitely saw some use, and at one point it suffered a break at the wrist - you can see a very old tight, repaired crack. The lower tang was broken at the screw, but is very solid. The butt stock has a repaired chip at the toe. The horn foreend tip has a chip missing on each side of the barrel. The ram rod may be a replacement, but is very old. The workmanship, engraving and quality of the rifle is impressive. This gun has definitely been there - South Africa in the 1800's! It does show use, character, tight cracks to the wood, dings, dents and marks to the steel - as you would expect from a working gun from this era. Overall though, a nice example of an antique express Cape rifle. ***** This can ship direct to Most states - a few restrictive places, i.e. N.J. may require a FFL.
