New England NICANOR KENDALL Underhammer Rifle
Description: New England NICANOR KENDALL Underhammer Rifle Made by Prison Laborers in Windsor, VT! Here we present an antique Nicanor Kendall Underhammer Rifle, manufactured in Windsor, Vermont, circa the mid-1840s. Kendall was born in Windsor, Vermont in 1807 and served an apprenticeship under gunsmith Asa Story and received a patent for his underhammer percussion lock. Underhammers have come to be known as a New England phenomenon and they did have the advantage of keeping the detonation of the primer away from one’s face as well as the hammer out of the line of sight. They also tend to be more simplistic, many utilizing the trigger guard as a leaf spring. Around 1835 he began to manufacture his underhammer rifles at the state prison in Windsor. Kendall produced his arms using unskilled prison labor for which he paid compensation to the state, and hired skilled workers to perform the technical work. One of Kendall’s first large orders came in 1836 from the people of Texas, who were seeking independence from Mexico. In 1843 Kendall entered into a partnership with Richard Smith Lawrence of New York. The two opened a custom rifle shop in Windsor where they manufactured both underhammer and side-hammer percussion rifles and shotguns. This rifle would have been right at home in the forests of New England in its day. The overall condition is very good. The metal has a dark plum patina. The markings are legible. The stock shows use and weathering and remains solid. The bore is clean with visible rifling. The action is strong. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 31 3/4 inches. Caliber: .56 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1575 #8061 SOLD Antique: Yes |
