Quality ANTIQUED Replica of a SAINT LOUIS S. HAWKEN RIFLE .52 Percussion
FRONTIER, ROCKY MOUNTAINS, PLAINS
Description: Quality ANTIQUED Replica of a SAINT LOUIS S. HAWKEN RIFLE .52 Percussion FRONTIER, ROCKY MOUNTAINS, PLAINS Here we present a Very Nice Replica of a Samuel Hawken Rifle. We believe this piece was made in the 20th Century. The Hawken rifle is a muzzle-loading rifle that was widely used on the prairies and in the Rocky Mountains of the United States during the early frontier days. Developed in the 1820s, it became synonymous with the Frontier plains rifle, the buffalo gun, the fur trapper’s gun, the pioneer, and exploration. It was displaced after the Civil War by breechloaders, such as the Sharps rifle, and lever-action rifles. The Hawken rifle was made and sold by Jacob and Samuel Hawken. Trained by their father as rifle smiths on the East Coast, the brothers moved to St. Louis, Missouri, at the beginning of the Rocky Mountain fur trade. Opening a gun shop in St. Louis in 1815, they developed their Rocky Mountain Rifle to serve the needs of fur trappers, traders, and explorers, making a quality gun, light enough to carry all the time, that could knock down big animals at long range. Hawken rifles had a reputation for both accuracy and long range. The earliest known record of a Hawken rifle dates to 1823 when one was made for William Henry Ashley. The Hawkens did not mass-produce their rifles but rather made each one by hand, one at a time. A number of famous men were said to have owned Hawken rifles, including famous American trapper and frontiersman Kit Carson and American President Theodore Roosevelt. The final pieces made by the Hawkens were in the 1880s. This one features a 32 ½” octagonal barrel in .52 percussion, Rocky Mountain sights, and a nicely striped stock. Iron patchbox with a primitive likeness of a bear on the lid. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is functional. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The stock remains solid and has nice grain. The powder horn is in very good condition. A very nice, antiqued replica of a legendary piece of American history, the originals of which are quite rare and expensive! Barrel is 32-1/2 inches. Caliber: .52 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
