Rare Allen & Wheelock 36 Cal Side Hammer Muzzle Loader No.10 Side Cock
Description: Serial #171T, .36 Caliber, 30 ¼ inch heavy octagon barrel with a very fine dark bore with strong rifling. This is a rare Allen & Wheelock No. 10 Side Cock hammer rifle built circa 1840's into the early 1860's. Production of these were essentially to order with total quantity estimated at few hundred by FLAYDERMAN'S GUIDE TO ANTIQUE AMERICAN FIREARMS (Page 68) and each one being somewhat different. This example remains in very good working condition with a strong hammer spring that holds at half and full cock. The metal surfaces show an even brown patina that has thinned to gray with several quarter size patches of roughness on the the barrel flats about mid way. The barrel marking is crisp with two line address "ALLEN & WHEELOCK / WORCESTER". The nipple is a modern replacement that easily screws in. It is sighted with the original rear iron sight and front German Silver Rocky Mt. Style sight. The walnut stock is solid with some hairline wood grain cracks at the wrist. The ramrod is a later replacement. A rare Allen & Wheelock side hammer field grade rifle. Antique Price: $995.00 Contact Seller |
