Rare American O/U Percussion Combination Gun Rifle Over Smoothbore

Description:
Offered here is a highly interesting and seldom encountered 19th century American percussion combination gun, believed to be Pennsylvania made and featuring desirable George Goulcher back action locks.

This antique sporting arm features a rifle barrel over a smoothbore barrel, an extremely practical configuration historically used for versatile hunting applications where both ball and shot capability were desirable in a single firearm.

The gun is built on a full length octagonal barrel assembly with double triggers and exposed percussion ignition. Particularly noteworthy is the distinctive “elephant trunk” style hammer configuration associated with the lower barrel, a feature commonly encountered on American over/under percussion arms of the period.

The lock plates are of the desirable back action pattern and appear consistent with the work of George Goulcher of Philadelphia, one of the best known American lock makers of the percussion era. Goulcher supplied locks to numerous American gunmakers throughout the mid-1800s and his work remains well regarded among collectors of early American firearms.

Additional features include:
• Brass furniture and decorative inlays
• Walnut stock with classic American frontier styling
• Double trigger arrangement
• Ramrod retained beneath barrel
• Engraved lockwork and metal accents
• Tang drilled for what was likely a period peep sight

Metal surfaces throughout display a pleasing untouched patina consistent with age and honest use. The wood retains attractive character with handling wear appropriate to a working sporting arm of the period.

Combination guns of this type are considerably less common than standard percussion rifles or shotguns and represent an important transitional period in American sporting arms development.

Condition remains solid and complete overall. The bores appear aged and should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith prior to any attempt at firing. This firearm is best appreciated today as a collector piece, historical sporting arm, or display example of early American combination gun craftsmanship.

An extremely attractive and uncommon American percussion era combination gun with strong collector appeal and authentic frontier character.

We warrant that the firearms are as they appear in our photos but do not warrant mechanical condition or operation.
